Since 1948, Camp Carter has been a place where adventure meets purpose. We serve thousands of children, families, and adults each year through, Overnight Camp, Day Camp, Outdoor Education, Equestrian Programs, Retreats & Conferences, and Family Programs. We're looking for an energetic, fun loving, sometimes silly, passionate, strategic, and mission driven leader to join our team as a Camp Nurse — someone ready to grow the camp’s community impact and help create safe, life changing experiences for youth and staff. ****THIS VOLUNTEER POSITION EARNS THE VOLUNTEER FREE DAY OR OVERNIGHT CAMP FOR THE DURATION OF THE COMPLETED VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENT**** Mission of the YMCA “To put Christian principles into practice through programs, services and relationships that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.” Areas of Impact The YMCA serves all people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Position Summary – Camp Nurse The Camp Nurse is a key leader in the health and safety of campers and staff. Under the direction of the Program Director, the Camp Nurse oversees: • Medication distribution • Response to illness and injury • Preventative health practices • Health documentation and compliance • Parent and medical partner communication Required Qualifications 1. Must be 21 years of age. 2. Licensed Registered Nurse (RN), Medical Doctor (MD), or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in the State of Texas. 3. Physical and mental capacity to respond effectively in emergencies. 4. Ability to lift 50 lbs. 5. Ability to work long shifts (12+ hours) including walking, lifting, and standing. 6. Strong communication skills with youth, staff, and families from diverse backgrounds. 7. Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain before camp). 8. Willingness to live on site during assigned camp periods. o Contracts available: 12 week, 5 week, 2 week, and per diem roles. Key Responsibilities 1. Camper & Staff Health and Safety • Oversee daily Health Lodge routines: o Sick call o Medication administration o In patient care o Treatments and follow up • Maintain emergency equipment and readiness. • Determine when higher level care is required (urgent care, ER, 911). • Maintain awareness of campers with chronic health needs or self carry medications. • Respond to emergencies per YMCA and ACA standards. 2. Health Records & Documentation • Review all health forms, ensure compliance, and follow up with parents as needed. • Maintain complete records using CampMinder or YMCA-approved systems. • Document all treatments, parent/doctor communication, and MARs daily. • Complete incident reports for all injuries, regardless of severity. 3. Communication & Professional Leadership • Serve as the health liaison with parents and physicians. • Maintain professional communication with the Camp Director and administrative team. • Participate in staff training, orientation, and ongoing safety initiatives. • Model YMCA core values and support a positive, inclusive environment. 4. Maintain Clean & Organized Health Lodge Operations • Keep living and work areas clean, sanitized, and well-stocked. • Ensure all areas comply with YMCA, ACA, and Texas Youth Camp standards. • Communicate camper whereabouts clearly with office and leadership staff. 5. Leadership & Culture Influence • Serve as a role model for campers and staff. • Promote behaviors aligned with Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. • Enforce camp rules fairly and consistently. • Build positive relationships based on trust and respect.

We heavily rely on this position in order to make camp happen. As a result, cancellations or pulling out of camp is not an option. We strongly urge all interested parties to ensure they can commit to their volunteer assignment. Additionally, any cancellations will result in forfeiture of the free camp opportunity provided to the volunteer's children.
